Cost-conscious couture

Wishing that your chemistry lab-required goggles came in pink? Can’t seem to comprehend how one textbook costs the same as your sweet new kicks? You’re not alone; many of us are hard-pressed for cash this back-to-school shopping season. Instead of having a nervous breakdown after looking inside my empty closet — which I did — calmly continue reading to discover the underappreciated world of secondhand and discount shopping.

I’m one of those savvy shoppers who can find gold at the bottom of a bargain bin. With proper practice and training, you can become one, too! First of all, don’t be intimidated by the sights or smells of secondhand merchandise. There’s nothing a couple runs through the wash with your good friends Tide or bleach can’t fix. Another key to doing bargain shopping right is to go on the prime days of the week. Goodwill stores offer a student discount on Saturdays, which translates to more money in your pocket just for flashing your Sun Card. Make sure that you hit up the trimmings section before checking out for awesome belts, sunglasses and jewelry.

If you’re still not sure about wearing things that were once owned by another, other discount stores such as Ross, Marshalls, Kohl’s and Target are always great places to find cost-effective basics and accessories. If you’re not worried about being seen in last season’s designer apparel, Nordstrom Rack, Neiman Marcus Last Call and Off 5th (Saks 5th Avenue’s cheaper sister store) can hold a variety of interesting finds at still excellent prices.

My credit card is already starting to feel the heat of rising premium denim prices, so I’ll see you at Goodwill. Look for me in the eveningwear section, and check back next week to learn how to turn your first party of the season into a fantastically tacky thrift store prom.
